ABS resin is one of engineering plastics superior to impact resistance, vibration absorption, rust prevention, electrical insulation, chemical resistance, and oil resistance. Then, bolted joint is a fixing method which is easy to assemble and disassemble plastic and metal members. However, viscoelastic materials such as plastics cause creep deformation at the clamped part and results in bolt loosening. In addition, vibration of bolted joints leads to loosening and fatigue failure of bolt and nut. This study has conducted a series of hammering tests and finite element (FE) simulations on bolted joined specimen of ABS resin and A5052 aluminum alloy plates. Comparing the hammering tests and the FE simulation results, the following were summarized: (1) The natural frequency gradually increased with the increase in the clamping force. The specimens containing the ABS resin member showed smaller changes in the natural frequency subjected to the change of the clamping force. (2) The damping ratio decreased with the increase in the clamping force. The results of the ABS-ABS specimens exhibited that smoother surface combination provides higher damping performance. (3) The slip ratio tended to increase with the increase in the displacement amplitude. The A5052-A5052 specimen exhibited the lowest slip ratio in all the specimens. In addition to possessing inherent damping properties, ABS resin can potentially enhance the damping performance of bolted joints by increasing the slip at the joint interface due to its low Young's modulus.
