Hydroponics is a production system in which crops are cultivated in a soilless medium through the controlled delivery of nutrient solutions. This method is often implemented within greenhouse or controlled-environment settings, enabling year-round production, increased yields, and the potential to strengthen localized and more resilient food systems. In the current study, one-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with hydroponic growers using qualitative research methods. The objective was to elicit stakeholders’ perspectives regarding the challenges they encounter, the training resources currently accessible to them, and their anticipated future training needs. Interview transcripts were analyzed using content analysis, through which researchers systematically coded the data into categories and emergent themes. The qualitative findings illustrate growers’ strong interest in, and commitment to, developing proficiency in hydroponic technologies. Participants described relying on training tools available through social media platforms, supplemented by iterative trial-and-error processes, to design and optimize their individualized production systems. Growers further identified a need for more structured support, including formal mentorship programs, sales and marketing resources, pest management guidance, produce safety training, and practical frameworks for launching and sustaining an entrepreneurial small business. Future training initiatives that intentionally integrate these components into a comprehensive and context-specific curriculum may enhance relevance, appeal, and sustained engagement among hydroponic growers. • Incorporate holistic mentoring programs into food safety training tools. • Sales and marketing emerged as a key training need identified by growers. • Growers are highly motivated resourceful individuals and invested in CEA.
