ABSTRACT This letter introduces a novel optimization method for suppressing grating lobes (GLs) in the design of aperiodic arrays. An initial element layout is generated using a hybrid approach that combines the Chebyshev distance with a breadth‐first search algorithm. Following the initial placement, a perturbation‐based refinement is applied. The two‐step strategy enhances the optimization's degrees of freedom, ultimately leading to effective GLs suppression. To validate the feasibility and performance of the proposed approach, a 5 × 5 aperiodic planar array is constructed and experimentally evaluated. The results demonstrate that the optimized aperiodic array configuration enables beam scanning across the specified frequency band while effectively suppressing GLs.
