It is with great enthusiasm that we launch Safety Science and Technology, a new international journal dedicated to advancing the frontiers of safety science and engineering. As global systems grow more interconnected, technologies more complex, and societal expectations for safety more demanding, the need for rigorous, integrative, and practice-oriented research has never been greater. This journal emerges at a critical moment—one in which scientific insight and technological innovation must converge to support safer industries, safer communities, and a safer world. Industry's safety challenges today span traditional scientific boundaries. Chemical process hazards intersect with renewable energy systems; fire dynamics interact with human behavior and structural design; mining operations require sophisticated risk controls; and digital technologies—from smart sensors to AI—transform both the risks we face and the tools available to manage them. These challenges are occurring in a global environment subjected to increasingly more frequent and severe natural disasters. Safety Science and Technology is founded on the belief that meaningful progress requires interdisciplinary thinking and an international exchange of knowledge. Our aim is to provide a high-level platform where researchers, engineers, practitioners, policymakers, and industry partners can share discoveries that not only deepen scientific understanding but also guide implementation in the real world. Our journal welcomes contributions that span a broad spectrum of safety science and safety engineering research. From chemical hazard modeling to fire investigation, from occupational exposure studies to zero-carbon energy systems, from mine ventilation technologies to community-level emergency management—our scope reflects the diverse and evolving realities of safety research and practice. We particularly encourage research that integrates fundamental science with engineering applications and policy relevance. The journal publishes original research articles, review papers, case studies, and policy analyses, with the goal of advancing both theoretical insight and real-world impact. By combining rigorous academic scholarship with practical relevance, we hope to strengthen the scientific foundation of global safety strategies and support evidence-based decision-making. We champion interdisciplinarity, uniting chemical, energy, fire, mining, process, systems, environmental, occupational, and AI-driven safety research under one umbrella. We look ahead by curating special issues on emerging safety challenges—translating cutting-edge research into actionable solutions. We benefit from the endorsement of the China Chemical Safety Association (CCSA), which provides unique connections to industry data, regulatory insights, and real-world case studies—bridging research, policy, and practice in ways few journals can achieve. We prioritize practical relevance, ensuring published work can be directly applied to strengthen safety management systems, engineering standards, and risk-reduction initiatives worldwide. We provide global visibility through open access, enabling immediate and unrestricted dissemination of your work. And in this launch phase, all Article Publication Charges (APCs) are waived, ensuring no-cost open access publishing for authors. Editor-in-Chief: Distinguished Professor Hao Wang, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia Deputy Editors-in-Chief: Professor Maureen Hassall, The University of Queensland, Australia Professor Lei Wang, Qingdao University of Science & Technology, China Editor: Professor Valerio Cozzani, University of Bologna, Italy Associate Editors Editorial Board Members Together, we are committed to maintaining rigorous peer review, supporting authors at every stage of publication, and fostering a scholarly community where diverse ideas and methodologies can flourish. As we launch Safety Science and Technology, we invite researchers from around the world to join us in shaping the future of safety science. By publishing your work with us—and by reading, sharing, and applying the research we feature—you contribute to a growing global effort to understand risk more deeply, design safer systems more intelligently, and protect lives more effectively. We look forward to receiving your submissions, collaborating with you, and building a journal that drives meaningful progress in Safety Science and Technology. Welcome to the inaugural chapter of Safety Science and Technology. Together, let us advance knowledge that safeguards our shared future. The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
