Exoskeletons can reduce low-back muscle load and fatigue during a variety of tasks, thus contributing to the establishment of a safe workstation and improved workers´ health. We evaluated the influence of Apex exoskeleton on the low-back muscle load of workers when performing tasks that involve bending and leaning movements in real and simulated industrial scenarios. Muscle activity reduction and exoskeleton acceptance were evaluated by means of objective and subjective methods. Data was extracted considering the complete work cycle, including periods where no flexion/extension movements were performed. The exoskeleton decreased low-back muscle activity by 8.4 % on average in all tasks. Participants provided positive feedback in all the evaluated criteria, although increased thermal sensation and armpit discomfort were also reported. These results may provide insights into the overall potential viability of passive exoskeletons implementation in real industrial sites and into those factors that may be considered to improve exoskeletons design.
