Planned obsolescence, the deliberate engineering ofproduct failure to shorten replacement cycles, has definedconsumer manufacturing since the Phoebus cartelstandardized lightbulb lifespans in 1925. This paper arguesthat artificial intelligence represents the first structuralforce capable of collapsing the economic logic thatsustains this century-old practice. We identify fiveconvergent vectors through which AI undermines plannedobsolescence: predictive maintenance eliminating thereplacement cycle, AI-powered repair democratizingtechnical expertise, materials informatics enabling designfor-durability, consumer intelligence collapsingOinformation asymmetry, and AI durability scoring creatingpre-purchase transparency. Critically, these vectors arrivesimultaneously with an unprecedented regulatoryinflection, the EU Right to Repair Directive (2024/1799),enforceable July 2026, and mandatory batteryreplaceability requirements, creating compoundingpressure that neither force could exert alone. We proposethat the convergence of AI capability and regulatorymandate initiates a quality recursion: a self-reinforcingfeedback loop in which durability becomes the dominantcompetitive advantage, reversing the incentive structurethat has governed consumer manufacturing for a century.The age of disposability is ending not because consumersdemanded it, they always did, but because AI finally madethe demand enforceable.
