Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are traditionally seen as producers of academic knowledge and providers of education. However, in today’s rapidly evolving world, marked by global crises, technological disruption, and growing social inequalities, this narrow role is increasingly insufficient. Despite extensive research, HEIs often stay siloed and fail to convert knowledge into societal impact. Research tends to remain within disciplinary boundaries, limiting the interdisciplinary approaches required to address complex social, environmental, and economic challenges such as climate change, inequality, digital exclusion, or public health crises. HEI structures often hinder cross-department and external collaboration, reinforcing isolation over civic engagement. The Catalyst Knowledge and Social Innovation Hub (CKSI) is a response to these structural limitations. CKSI seeks to connect academia with society, turning HEIs into collaborative agents of change. This solution establishes a collaborative digital platform that enables co-creation of knowledge among academia, civil society, policymakers, industry, and communities, to produce solutions to real problems. Its modular, replicable design supports the integration of research, community engagement, and lifelong learning. By aligning institutional practices with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), CKSI aspires to foster systemic innovation, build stronger societal partnerships, and transform HEIs into drivers of sustainable development and inclusive change. CKSI employs a multi-phase, collaborative methodology designed to transform HEIs into dynamic hubs of social innovation. The approach defines SDG-aligned priorities, builds a collaborative platform, and pilots it in HEIs to test adaptability and impact. The methodology emphasizes co-creation with stakeholders, iterative development, and a modular design that supports scalability and replication across diverse institutional contexts. Therefore, CKSI envisions a transformative shift in HEIs from traditional, siloed entities into dynamic, socially embedded hubs of innovation. Through CKSI, information and resources can be shared. Expected outcomes include greater interdisciplinarity, stronger academia–community ties, and a shift toward participatory, impact-oriented research. The initiative seeks to deliver societal impact, foster lifelong learning, and provide a replicable model for HEIs worldwide, aligning academia with the SDGs and sustainable development.
