Potato is one of the most important food crops worldwide. However, its productivity is severely affected by viral diseases such as potato virus Y, potato virus X, potato virus A, and potato leafroll virus. Over the past several decades, in vitro techniques such as meristem culture, thermotherapy, chemotherapy, cryotherapy, and electrotherapy have played a crucial role in eliminating viruses from infected plant material. Combining these methods often improves the efficiency of virus eradication. In addition, the regeneration capacity of plants after the application of these in vitro techniques is one of the most important criteria in selecting an appropriate virus eradication method. This review summarizes current studies in the literature, evaluates their implications for the scientific community, and highlights key aspects that are often overlooked. Furthermore, it suggests potential directions for future research.
