On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the death of Robert Burns Wooodward (1917–1979), who received the 1965 Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for his outstanding achievements in the art of organic synthesis,” this article reviews Woodward’s life and career and discusses his most important contributions.
