Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit, characterized by painful nodules, recurrent abscesses, and sinus tracts, with a major impact on quality of life. While it was once considered a localized skin disorder, it is now recognized as a systemic inflammatory disease associated with multiple comorbidities. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the pathophysiology, clinical staging, and disease phenotypes, as well as the available treatment options. The emphasis is on global patient management, including therapeutic education, patient involvement in lifestyle modifications, screening for comorbidities, and addressing the psychological, relational, and sexual burden of the disease.
