EUS has evolved remarkably from rigid, blind probes in the 1950s to sophisticated imaging and tissue acquisition techniques today. Although initially met with skepticism, EUS has become indispensable in diagnosing and staging gastrointestinal and pancreaticobiliary diseases. This article traces the historical milestones and technological innovations of diagnostic EUS, setting the stage for a subsequent review of therapeutic applications.
