This special issue of the Journal of Sortition was born of a conference held at Yale University in February 2024. 4 We curated contributions that specifically engaged with the question of how citizens’ assemblies are and should be governed. Together, they explore the tensions and trade-offs inherent in different design choices, as well as the normative commitments and practical constraints that shape them. The contributions draw on the experience of the first two French Citizens’ Conventions, respectively on climate and end-of-life issues, with a special emphasis on the latter, more recent, experience. In addition, the issue also includes comparative analyses with citizens’ assemblies conducted in other countries and at the global level.
Landemore et al. (Tue,) studied this question.
