One of the main challenges in its treatment is its variable chemical composition, which depends on the olive pressing processes. Therefore, this study examines the feasibility of using a constructed wetland planted with vegetation for OMWW treatment. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the treatment efficiency by assessing the reduction of organic load and toxic phenolic compounds in the outflow. A constructed wetland treatment system planted with reeds was utilized. The system consists of a reactor filled with a specific filtration medium, into which a controlled vertical flow mixture of OMWW and municipal wastewater (MWW) is introduced. The treatment efficiency was assessed by measuring the removal rates of phenols and organic load in two distinct stages: First stage: The reactor was fed with a fixed mixing ratio of OMWW and MWW (OMWW/MWW = 1%), followed by an increase in the hydraulic loading rate (HLR). High removal rates were achieved, ranging from 91% to 50% for phenols at HLR values between 10 and 117.5 L/m²/day. Second stage: The HLR values applied in the first stage were maintained while the OMWW ratio in the mixture was gradually increased. The results showed phenol removal rates ranging from 41% to 84% at mixing ratios from OMWW/MWW = 3% to OMWW/MWW = 0.5%. The findings indicate that the proposed treatment system exhibited lower efficiency as the OMWW concentration in the mixture increased. This decline in efficiency is attributed to the biodegradation of phenolic compounds and their adsorption within the reactor layers.
