This paper presents the design and implementation of a wireless communication integrated active noise control (ANC) system to mitigate harmful noise for ICU patients and provide social interaction among patients and their family members. A multi-channel feedforward ANC system employing the filtered-x least mean square (FxLMS) algorithm was designed by using the Hill-Rom patient bed as a test platform, then deployed based on a TMS320 DSP C6713 digital signal processing system. The system was evaluated by computer simulation first, then tested on a mimic ICU noisy environment against narrowband multi-tone noise, wideband white noise, and recorded ICU noise. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate significant noise reduction of 10-30 dB, highlighting ANC as a promising solution for addressing high noise levels in ICUs. To tackle social isolation among ICU patients, we propose integrating a duplex wireless communication system based on Gaussian phase shift keying (GPSK) and frequency hopping spectrum spreading (FHSS) with the ANC framework, enabling social interaction with family and friends. This wireless-integrated ANC (WiANC) system was implemented and tested, achieving a 30 dB signal-to-noise ratio for speech signals.
