The shoulder (aṃsa) represents one of the most functionally complex and clinically significant regions of the human body, particularly within traditional Indian medical systems where vital points known as marma are recognized for their therapeutic and energetic importance. Among these, Amsa Marma holds a central place due to its anatomical intricacy and its relevance in both movement and somatic regulation. This comprehensive review synthesizes classical Ayurvedic descriptions of Amsa Marma with contemporary anatomical, biomechanical, and clinical insights to elucidate its structural and functional correlates in modern medicine. By integrating historical texts, cadaveric studies, imaging-based evaluations, and neuromusculoskeletal research, we map the Amsa Marma to specific osseous landmarks, muscle groups (notably the deltoid and rotator cuff complexes), neurovascular networks (brachial plexus branches and axillary vessels), and fascia-rich interfascial planes that contribute to shoulder stability and proprioception. We further explore how Amsa’s conceptual domain overlaps with established notions of trigger points, vulnerable zones in trauma, and regions of heightened sensorimotor integration.
