Abstract One week before the 2025 presidential inauguration, a group of scholars met virtually and began a conversation about the multiple and overlapping crises in higher education, from austerity budgets and labor exploitation to the assault on DEI and police raids on pro-Palestinian encampments. In the intervening months—as the new administration further ramped up assaults on higher education—the group continued their conversation virtually and on the page. Their goal was to chart where they’ve been, where things stand, and how to move toward proactive strategies to remake higher education into a democratic institution.
