Impact of insecurity on library patronage among students of private universities in selected states in South East. Nigeria

This study examined impact of insecurity on library patronage among students of private universities in selected states in South East. Two research objectives and two research questions were posed to guide the study. The research design adopted for this study is descriptive survey research design. The population sample was three thousand, one hundred and fifty-two (3,152) students of the institution studied. The population is made up of students of Coal City University, Enugu; Godffery Okoye University, Enugu State; Claretian University, Nekede, Imo State and Hezekiah University, Umudi Nkwerre, Imo State. A sample of 350 was drawn using the Taro Yamene’s statistical formula for samples. The instrument employed for data collection was a rated questionnaire. The instrument was designed using Google form and forwarded to the WhatsApp groups of the universities studied with the help of a researcher assistant each from the schools. Data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that several forms of insecurity affect students’ library patronage in the states studied and insecurity has great impact on the patronage of the library by students. Based on the findings, it was recommended that: the university management should make every effort to wade off external attacks from the campuses by providing adequate security personnel in and around the libraries.
