We qualitatively explored the lived experiences of family members employing formal home-based caregivers to assist a person living with dementia who requires assistance with daily tasks within the South African context. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis revealed five themes: (a) Finding the right match; (b) Job expectations; (c) Home as a care facility; (d) The South African context; and (e) Recommendations. Employing caregivers eased family burden but required significant adjustments. These findings highlight the complexities of integrating caregivers into households and provide healthcare professionals with insights to better understand home-based care dynamics, facilitating appropriate recommendations.
