The aim is to review evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders among older adults.
Conducted a scoping review of treatment interventions
Examined behavioral interventions and pharmacotherapy
Analyzed existing literature on efficacy in older adults
Identified cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI) as effective interventions
Highlighted the potential of pharmacotherapy and SBIRT
Noted a need for more research to solidify evidence base
Abstract
Evidence-informed behavioral interventions (e.g. CBT and MI), pharmacotherapy, and SBIRT may be effective for older adults with SUD; however, more research is needed to establish evidence base.
