Retinal vascular occlusions, including central retinal artery occlusion and central retinal vein occlusion, represent both ophthalmological emergencies and indicators of systemic vascular pathology. Family doctors are the first to encounter patients, and they have a key role in the early recognition of retinal vascular occlusions, referral to other specialists for diagnosis and treatment, and long-term secondary prevention. The role of the family doctors is also essential in the diagnosis and management of identified systemic vascular diseases, treating cardiovascular risk factors and comorbidities in order to prevent recurrences of retinal vascular occlusions and cardiovascular events. This article follows the association between retinal vascular occlusions and cardiovascular diseases, with the aim of highlighting the alarm signs for family physicians, in order to diagnose as early as possible and prevent.
