Avian rhinotracheitis is a major respiratory viral disease in poultry caused by avian metapneumovirus, leading to significant health and productivity consequences.
Avian rhinotracheitis is a major respiratory viral disease of domestic birds, with significant consequences for both the health status of flocks and productivity in intensive poultry systems. The disease is found primarily in chickens and turkeys, but can also affect other commercially raised avian species, being associated with slowed growth rates, deterioration of feed conversion ratios, reduced egg production and with an increased frequency of secondary bacterial complications. The causative agent is avian metapneumovirus (avian metapneumovirus – aMPV), classified in the genus Metapneumovirus, family Pneumoviridae, order Mononegavirales.
