Traditional sex education focuses on the prevention of health risks such as sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancy. Feminist researchers, on the other hand, argue for an inclusive approach to sex education that fosters a positive and empowering understanding of sexuality. This article evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of feminist approaches to sex education through the review of 17 sex education programs shortlisted through a systematic search and screening procedure between February and March 2022. A meta-analysis examining the effects on the acceptance of rape myths indicates a significant decrease compared to control groups (STD = −.41, 95% CI: −.65, −.16). Our review findings suggest that sex education adopting feminist approaches is effective in enhancing knowledge on gender, power, and violence; promoting self-confidence in physical appearance and body control; and reducing adherence to stereotypical beliefs about sexual assaults and rape victims while encouraging engagement in sexual violence prevention and resistance efforts.
