This paper explores the concept of digital libraries by examining their opportunities and challenges in the contemporary information environment. Digital libraries have transformed traditional library systems by enabling wide access to digitized and born-digital resources, supporting knowledge sharing beyond geographical and temporal boundaries. The study highlights key opportunities such as enhanced access to information, inclusion of diverse user groups, digital preservation, interoperability, collaboration, and support for open access and open data initiatives. At the same time, it analyses major challenges including technical and infrastructural limitations, intellectual property and licensing issues, metadata quality and standards, privacy and security concerns, sustainability, and the persistent digital divide. The paper argues that while digital libraries play a crucial role in education, research, and knowledge dissemination, their long-term success depends on effective policy frameworks, sustainable economic models, technological innovation, and inclusive strategies.
