The U.S. Supreme Court last month reopened a long‐running debate over how far states can go to regulate mental health care delivered through talk therapy, issuing an 8–1 decision in Chiles v. Salazar that set aside Colorado's 2019 ban on conversion therapy for minors. While the ruling turned on constitutional questions about free speech, it immediately raised concerns among clinicians and advocates about the stability of patient protections that many states have treated as settled law.
