The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on treatment providers worldwide to rely on two treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD): methadone and buprenorphine. Worldwide, OUD is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality. According to WHO, of 600,000 deaths attributed to drug use, about 450,000 are due to opioid use.
