The article, grounded in archival materials from the trial of the train commandant of the ataman of the Ussuri Cossack army, I.P. Kalmykov, and sotnik L.B. Piskunov, explores the dynamics of the Civil War in the Russian Far East. It provides a detailed analysis of the court documents, the nature of the criminal cases consideration, and the procedural aspects of the trial. The study highlights that the adjudication of the case was firmly rooted in an ideological framework, specifically the class-based principles underpinning the construction of the Soviet state, which served as the foundation for its emerging legal system. It is concluded that, demonstrating the inevitability of punishment as a mechanism to safeguard the socialist state of workers and peasants, as well as the legal order established therein, by applying protective social measures against those who engaged in socially harmful acts.
