ABSTRACT Yb 3 TaO 7 thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were produced by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). Thermo‐mechanical properties and calcium–magnesium–alumino‐silicate (CMAS) corrosion behavior of Yb 3 TaO 7 coating were investigated. Results indicate that Yb 3 TaO 7 coating exhibited thermal conductivity of 1.02 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 1273 K, about 51% lower than typical 8 wt% Y 2 O 3 stabilized ZrO 2 coating (8YSZ, 2.1 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 1273 K), and matched thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of 13.1×10 −6 K −1 with superalloy substrate. In addition, it possessed fracture toughness of 2.36±0.22 MPa·m 1/2 and elastic modulus of 114.91±29.51 GPa, which is superior to 8YSZ coating (1.98 MPa·m 1/2 and 245 GPa). Furthermore, the CMAS penetration depth of Yb 3 TaO 7 coating was significantly lower than that of 8YSZ coating, suggesting the superior resistance of Yb 3 TaO 7 coating to CMAS corrosion.
