In the early 20th century, the Nakhchivan Research and Investigation Society (NRIS), which operated in Nakhchivan, became the first scientific institution established in the republic during the years of autonomy. At that time, the “Research and Investigation” Society, which began to organize in the early months of 1925 and started its practical activity in May of the same year, played a significant role in the development of museum work in Nakhchivan, more precisely in the formation of the Nakhchivan History and Ethnography Museum. After the Sovietization of Nakhchivan in 1920, the main attention of the Nakhchivan Council of People’s Commissars was directed toward the measures that were necessary to be implemented in the fields of education and culture. After Nakhchivan gained the status of an autonomous republic, alongside the work carried out in this sphere, the development of the cultural field also became a focus of attention. Certain archival documents and press materials make it clear that after Nakhchivan obtained autonomous status, the first scientific institution established here was the Nakhchivan Research and Investigation Society (NRIS).
