Section A of the Voynich Manuscript as Archaic Middle Welsh: Statistical, Lexical, and Morphological Evidence

The herbal section (Section A, folios f1–f57, f87–f102) of the Voynich Manuscript (Beinecke MS 408, Yale University Library) has resisted decipherment since its acquisition in 1912. This paper presents convergent evidence that Section A is written in archaic Middle Welsh, specifically in the genre of the Meddygon Myddfai (Physicians of Myddfai) herbal recipe tradition, c. 1400 AD. Four independent lines of evidence support this claim. First, the statistical profile of Section A — Index of Coincidence (IC = 0.0795) and Zipf slope (0.775) — is consistent with natural language and specifically with medieval Welsh. Second, 17 EVA tokens are authenticated against the Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru (GPC), the standard historical Welsh dictionary, all with attestation dates predating the manuscript's radiocarbon date (1404–1438 AD). Third, morphological analysis identifies systematic prefix families and a coherent inflection system, all GPC-confirmed. Fourth, four folio translations produce coherent herbal recipes matching the Meddygon Myddfai genre, with six cross-folio patterns confirming systematic vocabulary use. Bootstrap permutation tests confirm significance at p < 10⁻¹⁰ (attestation date test), p < 0.001 (blind plant prediction, 7/10 correct), and z = +7.63 σ (semantic cluster test, p < 10⁻⁵). Combined: χ² = 91.9 (df = 8, p ≪ 0.0001).
