When I was a new registrar, protecting the privacy of a student's education records was one of my top responsibilities. It still is. But back then I treated requests for disclosures of education records with a great deal of suspicion. As a result, many of those who requested education records got a rather defensive response from me. Looking back, I viewed myself as the gatekeeper with the keys. Only those who could convince me that they had an unquestionably valid need to see a student's records would get access.
