Without mincing words, loud noise, harmful noise is all about and it constitutes one of the major threats to human health and effective hearing. Considering the deleterious effects of exposure to chronic noise, there is urgent need for noise awareness for all and sundry. People need to be abreast of what constitutes noise and which noise can cause damage especially anything above 85 decibels, its menace and possible prevention strategies. This paper painstakingly discussed the issue of chronic noise with special emphasis on the attendant health effects. Specifically, various sources of chronic noise were identified, including their peak levels before highlighting the health effects of prolonged exposure to such deafening noise. Besides, possible preventive measures were also outlined because it is believed that the average healthy and non exposed person can have normal hearing for at least up to age sixty. In order to further curtail the evil of exposure to chronic noise, pragmatic suggestions were made which include the need to to regulate and reduce environmental noise exposure especially at the source and to enforce exposure limits so as to checkmate and guard against the negative health effects.
