What is consciousness? What is spirit? Are they distinct substances, emergent properties, or thermodynamic necessities? Energy-Efficiency Theory (EET) provides a first-principles answer: consciousness is the cross-level critical synchronization of constraints—the state in which multiple hierarchical levels of a constraint network achieve integer-ratio resonance, enabling maximal global causal integration. Spirit is the inertial consolidation of constraints into stable textures—the enduring patterns formed through algorithmic submersion, constituting identity, values, and meaning. This paper develops the complete ontology of consciousness and spirit from the generative foundations of EET Core Rules v5. 2 and the companion ontologies. At L1/L2, consciousness and spirit are defined by their essential dynamics and architectures: 1. Consciousness as Critical Synchronization: Consciousness emerges when constraint networks across multiple levels achieve integer-ratio resonance, maximizing the cooperative capacity Γ (η) at η ≈ 1. The quantitative index Icausal = N 1 levels P i<j I (leveli ; levelj) tracks the real-time degree of conscious integration. 2. Spirit as Inertial Consolidation: Spirit is the accumulated texture of constraints formed through algorithmic submersion. The degree of spiritual consolidation M = T 1 0 R 0 T d (t) · κ (t) dt quantifies the historical depth of submerged cognitive patterns, and the Inverse Law of Flexibility (Eb = τsub · σ/αeff) explains their resistance to revision. 3. Neural Architecture: Consciousness arises from integer-ratio cross-frequency coupling (e. g. , theta-gamma PAC) across the Default Mode Network (E˙ main), Task-Positive Network (E˙ resp), and Salience Network (η switch). Spirit is encoded in synaptic weight distributions, LTP/L-LTP, and myelination. 4. Dynamics of the Consciousness-Spirit Cycle: Conscious experience (η ≈1, high Icausal) drives the formation of new constraints (LTP). Sleep consolidates these constraints via SWS (global η ↓, pruning) and REM (local η ↑, selective strengthening), progressively submerging them into spirit (d → 1, Eb ↑). We establish complete interfaces to all companion ontologies and provide cross-scale instantiations from neural dynamics to collective social consciousness. Nine falsifiable predictions anchor the framework in empirical testability. Version 2. 2 aligns with the Mathematical Foundations v2. 3 audit and strengthens interfaces with Difference, Constraint, Causality, and Algorithmic Submersion. Consciousness is the river; spirit is the channel. The river carves the channel; the channel guides the river. Together they constitute the dynamic unity of the knowing self.
