The task is to determine the role and place of the correspondence form of education in the modern educational process, taking into account the development of the situation associated with the permanent transformation of domestic education and the situation on the labor market. Analysis of the state of distance learning in the Russian Federation is carried out, references are made to the opinions of leading specialists. The advantages and disadvantages of distance learning are discussed in detail. The problems of ensuring the quality of this form of education are analyzed. It is concluded that the solution of quality problems in this case is largely shifted to the "shoulders" of the learners (it is not possible to teach, but it is possible to learn) and the quality of independent work, provided by the corresponding teaching and methodological complex, plays a decisive role. The concept of building engineering graphics training in BSTU VOENMEH and its organization is shown. Examples of assignments and tests, statistical data, and pedagogical commentary are given. It is concluded that in the framework of the correspondence and even face-toface training process, it is not possible to ensure the appropriate quality of graphic training (despite the abundance of technical means) for high-tech industries. It is argued that the most important factor in quality assurance is effective mentoring, which is not possible in distance learning. A comparison of the amount of training and the range of assignments of extracurriculars and full-time specialties for ROSTEH is given. It is argued that the extracurricular form of engineering training is only suitable for the social function of education. Engineering graphics in this situation performs the functions of a "brick" in a special educational design for the extracurriculars.
