An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Worcestershire Archaeology (WA) in December 2025 at Froxmere Road, Crowle, Worcestershire (NGR SO 9282 5586). This comprised six evaluation trenches across three fields. The project was commissioned by The Environment Partnership (TEP) on behalf of Elan Homes, in advance of a proposed residential development. Planning permission has been granted subject to a programme of archaeological works (planning reference APP/H1840/W/24/3343597). Six trenches were excavated across the three fields that comprise the Site, on the south-eastern side of the village of Crowle. With the exception of Trench 6, the features that were identified relate to medieval or later agricultural activity, correlating with the results of the geophysical survey. The feature in Trench 6 is a long but shallow pit, likely to be of either Iron Age or Saxon date. If it were to be Iron Age, it would add to the limited body of evidence for late Prehistoric activity in the wider area. Were it to be of Saxon date, the feature is the right shape and profile to be a Sunken Featured Building, and would be the first archaeological remains from that period for Crowle, furthering the understanding of the early medieval origins of the settlement.
