ABSTRACT This paper presents a novel coupler with a multi‐coil receiver to suppress mutual inductance fluctuation in dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) systems. A mutual inductance phase‐shift compensation strategy is proposed, where the receiving (Rx) coils are spatially arranged such that valleys are compensated by peaks as to the mutual inductances of various Rx coils, resulting in a smoother mutual inductance profile. A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to determine optimal geometric parameters under physical constraints, aided by a fast mutual inductance calculation method to improve calculation speed. To further ensure mutual inductance phase‐shift compensation, a current synchronization strategy among multiple transmitter (Tx) coils is developed. Based on the optimized results, five typical coupler prototypes are fabricated and tested. Experimental validation shows that the proposed coupler achieves a mutual inductance fluctuation less than 2% and output voltage fluctuation less than 3%.
