Abstract BACKGROUND: Katakaphaladi Anjana (KPA) is a herbo-mineral formulation, indicated in Timiraroga (disorders related to visual disturbances). This study aimed to perform the acute eye irritation/corrosion study of KPA in New Zealand white rabbits. METHODS: About 0.1 g of KPA was administered in the right eye (treatment eye) of three rabbits as per Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)-405 guidelines. Observation was obtained at 1, 24, 48, and 72 h, and compared with the left eye (control group). The observation of changes in the eyes was graded according to OECD-405 guidelines. The eyes were examined using a fluorescein strip for the detection and measurement of ocular damage. The epithelial cell damage was examined using an ophthalmoscope and scores based on the dye attached to the percentage of the area of the eye. The result was generated based on the individual mean score of the three animals. RESULTS: KPA did not produce any ocular irritant effect under the tested conditions. Hence, the test item KPA is considered nonirritant and safe for ocular use. CONCLUSION: Therefore, it is suggested that KPA is safe to administer in Timira (myopia) without ocular irritation/corrosive effect.
