The 21st century is a century of opportunities as well as challenges. If we focus specifically on the aspect of Health, Human society is yet to achieve the target it aspired for in Alma Ata Declaration (1978). As we are moving forward in this century, achieving universal health has been becoming more challenging, the reason being emergence of modern day health problems such as Non-communicable diseases, climate change related health problems, mental health related issues, and increased incidences of antimicrobial resistance. The recent impetus that has been given towards Traditional complementary & Alternative medicine worldwide is a step to deal with modern day health problems in holistic way. This paper specifically focuses on one important segment of this system of medicine which has originated from Indian indigenous knowledge system which is Ayurveda. This paper seeks to highlight that how Ayurveda, an ancient medical knowledge system is holistic model for health and well being, capable of dealing with modern day health problems and at the same time it is relatively sustainable model . However there lies some potential challenges also that hinders proper utilisation of this knowledge system , this paper seeks to highlight those issues too. The findings are based on extensive literature reviews, from journal articles to research papers, reports of various national and international organisations etc.
