Abstract This article examines Nietzsche’s diagnosis of the death of God as a key motif for interpreting the post-secular present. It focuses on the question of what remains ‚after God‘ and how his legacy can be understood as an inner, psychologically effective principle. Following C. G. Jung’s interpretation, the focus shifts from metaphysical annihilation to a displacement into the unconscious. Human beings can thus be understood as bearers of an inner testament, which manifests itself as an internalised tension of the post-secular coexistence of religious and non-religious frames of reference.
