History always deals with society and the social issues that seem relevant from the viewpoint of current norms of politics. In India, this has always been the case since milleniums, which is why we always refer to our traditional texts (which have laid out very clearly the norms of ethical, social, moral, political behaviour) for discussion of any issues that bother us even today. But especially since the 19th century when the British rule was relatively firmly established in India – the colonial masters began to soar high in terms of their imagination for marginalization of the systems that the indigenous society in India had evolved over the time. It is in this context that we have to understand the entire discourse on the Dalit problem and historiography. The present paper explores the development of Dalit resistance movements along with their mentors like Babasahib Bhimrao Ambedkar, Jyotiba Phule, alongside, analyzing the historiographical details as available in the traditional historical sources and Indian texts.
