Patients admitted with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack at West Georgia Medical Center
Screening for atrial fibrillation and stroke prevention knowledge using questionnaires
Detection of previously unrecognized atrial fibrillation and rate of anticoagulant use in known AF
A high proportion of stroke/TIA patients in Georgia have unrecognized AF or are undertreated with anticoagulants, highlighting a need for improved patient and physician education.
Abstract Background and aims Repablic of Georgia is among low-and middle-income countries where approximately 70% of stroke deaths. The population of Georgia is 3.7 million, of which about 57% lives in urban setting. The population with the age of 65 or more represents 14.3% of the total population so they have a high risk to get stroke if they do not prevent it. West Georgia medical center is only one stoke center in Georgia which is accredited by American American Accreditation Commission International (AACI) and has high responsibility to do researches for preventive stoke and to make social educational programs for stoke patients. Methods Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Ethics Committee of West Georgia Medical Center Kutaisi, Georgia. All patients who edmited in our hospital with ischemic stroke or transitor ischemic attack where screened. Screening was performed using questionnaires which included ques-tions about age, gender, if they know about their arterial fibrillation and what kind medication did they take for it, also when they did ecg or hotter last time. Results AF was detected in approximately one-fourth of patients with ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack without previously recognized AF. Patients have no information about stroke prevention. Also there was detected that 45 %of patients who knews about there AF do not get anticoagulants. Conclusions Our research revealed that High incidency of stroke in Georgia is a result of low level of education in our population and also we need to do more trainings with family doctors about stroke prevention and AF. Janelidze et al. (Fri,) conducted a cross-sectional in Ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. Questionnaire-based screening was evaluated on Detection of atrial fibrillation and anticoagulant use. Screening of patients with ischemic stroke or TIA revealed newly detected atrial fibrillation in approximately 25%, while 45% of patients with known atrial fibrillation were not receiving anticoagulants.
