This study evaluated the adsorption performance of illite for removing Cs-137 and Sr-90 from contaminated water discharged from spent nuclear fuel. Illite mined in Yeongdong, Gangwon-do, was used, and radioactive solutions were prepared by diluting Cs-137 and Sr-90 standard radioactive solutions with tertiary distilled water. Illite was added to 500 mL of each solution and mixed via upward stirring during the adsorption reaction. After the reaction, the solid–liquid phase was centrifuged. The Cs-137 concentration was measured using a gamma nuclide analyzer, while the Sr-90 concentration was measured using a liquid scintillation counter. In the experiment, 10 g of 25-50 μm illite was added to 500 mL of 10 Bq/mL Cs-137. After reacting for 10 min, approximately 93.70% and 17.20% Cs-137 and Sr-90 were adsorbed, respectively.
