Abstract The measurement of magnetic properties using toroidal ring specimen is a standardized procedure, whereby the standard is based on the assumption of homogeneous fields. In the case of loose-fitting windings of the secondary coil, the standard specifies a stray flux compensation. This is also based on a linear approximation that ignores the inhomogeneity of the true field. Technical solutions, that reduce the time-consuming and resource-intensive application of the windings, regularly result in configurations with a significant air gap between the specimen and the winding. In these cases, the linear stray flux compensation specified in the standard is no longer sufficient, and stray flux compensation that takes field inhomogeneity into account must be applied. The method is derived and generalized for the comparability of different test configurations and geometries. A closable secondary winding is presented and used to validate the proposed method by measurement.
