The European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine Guideline on Preoperative Fasting in Children recognizes the very different needs of children and issued a significantly liberalized recommendation in 2022. In the meantime, numerous studies have been published that confirm these recommendations and add to their evidentiary basis. The following overview provides an update on perioperative fasting in children and presents further risk constellations associated with delayed gastric emptying.
