ABSTRACT Psychopathy is a condition characterized by a lack of empathy and guilt, superficial emotional responses, manipulation, and violent behaviors. In connection with the weakened emotional response, this study examines the formation and appearance of desensitization patterns in psychopathy from a Gestalt therapy theory viewpoint. The development of desensitization/callousness from a Gestalt and field theory perspective is explored, including the relationship between desensitization and psychopathy during childhood. How manipulation, psychological needs, and affect operate within psychopathy is addressed. Finally, the contribution of Gestalt theory in clinical interviews with individuals exhibiting psychopathic traits is discussed.
