Abstract Communication in a non-native language is a fundamentally human and creative task, requiring the mutual negotiation of meaning across sociocultural contexts. The increasingly common argument that advances in natural language processing obviate the need for foreign language study misunderstands both the true nature of language proficiency and the fundamental limitations of probabilistic language modeling. This article examines why learning foreign languages remains essential.
