This note clarifies the relation between Christopher Gill’s objective-participant model of archaic personality and the theory of the field of access. It argues that both approaches resist the projection of modern inward subjectivity onto archaic Greek poetry, but that they operate at different analytic levels. Gill analyzes personality, ethical agency, and the public forms through which character becomes intelligible; the field of access asks how presence becomes available through mediated indices such as body, voice, formula, object, deixis, performance, memory, and scene. The note therefore presents the two approaches as complementary theoretical gestures rather than as stages in a hierarchy.
