Narita International Airport has been working on various initiatives, considering coexistence measures, airport development, and regional development as a trinity. In addition, since its opening, Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA) has taken measures to address the various issues that arise from being an inland airport. Among these are environmental measures and regional development, and environmental measures include noise control, air quality conservation, water quality conservation, and natural environment conservation, with aircraft noise having the greatest impact on the areas surrounding the airport. Currently, Narita International Airport is working on “further expanding the capacity of Narita Airport,” and by constructing Runway C and extending Runway B, it will be possible to increase the annual takeoff and landing capacity from the current 300 000 to 500 000. In addition, they are proposing a “one-terminal” and considering reforms to realize a new Narita International Airport. In this article, we will explain what initiatives and measures Narita International Airport is taking in cooperation with local governments and residents, based on the basic philosophy that “airport development is community development,” as well as the changes in flight status and the situation regarding aircraft noise before and after COVID-19.
