Paul has been instrumental in our studies of Icelandic whales. Without his help and ingenuity, we could not have made the first audiograms of two wild white beaked dolphins. We were many on this project from several countries and Paul had experienced students with to help. After capturing a dolphin, it was placed in a pool onboard our ship. Here we could measure the auditory brainstem responses to different frequencies and intensities of acoustic stimuli. Another project was an to attempt to capture a minke whale and measure its audiogram. Paul and students were on this project too. Unfortunately, the mesh of the net we could rent was too small and thus could not be pulled around the whale fast enough. The whale just swam out (and gave us the “eye”). My short presentation will be supplemented with a video of each project.
