Abstract: Cymbopogon citratus (C. citratus), a tropical medicinal plant from the Poaceae family, is widely distributed across Southeast Asia and is known for its rich essential oil content comprising terpenes, aldehydes, ketones, and esters. Traditionally used for various therapeutic purposes, C. citratus has demonstrated a broad range of pharmacological activities, including antimicrobial, antimalarial, antioxidant, anticancer, hypoglycemic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies have highlighted its potential hepatoprotective properties. This review aims to evaluate the protective effects of C. citratus against chemically induced hepatic injury. Scientific literature was sourced from databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. Findings reveal that C. citratus exhibits significant hepatoprotective effects in animal models subjected to hepatotoxins, including acetaminophen, carbon tetrachloride, hydrogen peroxide, and antitubercular drugs. The plant’s mechanism of action is linked to its potent antioxidant properties and the inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes, promoting liver tissue repair. Key bioactive constituents are believed to play a central role in its protective action. Overall, this review underscores the therapeutic promise of C. citratus as a natural alternative in the management of liver disorders and encourages further investigation into its clinical potential.
