The discovery of business processes in manufacturing data has been a key challenge in recent years. Manufacturing execution systems (MES) have played a central role in the digitization of production. These systems allow organizations to schedule production plans and monitor their progress. Traditionally, these systems have operated on the basis of production-oriented views compared to process-oriented views. In this paper, we bridge the gap to address challenges and lessons learned while investigating MES data from a business process-oriented perspective. We outline and evaluate challenges of MES Data for business processes analytics. In particular, we investigate the data transformation, manual and automated confirmations, disturbances and rework. We demonstrate our findings based on a running example from manufacturing. For future work, we aim to further investigate multimodal process mining applied on MES data.
